Thanet Street — Malvern
ALTERATION & ADDITION
A striking contemporary double storey addition that seamlessly merges a classic Edwardian home into a sprawling family retreat, creating a harmonious dialogue between past and present.
Located on one of Malvern’s most sought-after streets and surrounded by other beautifully restored homes, the project preserves the essence of the original dwelling. The elegant façade and three front bedrooms have been meticulously retained and restored, while bold new interventions introduce a fresh sense of flow, function and light. The rear addition embraces contemporary minimalism with clean lines, expansive glazing and a refined material palette of light brick and smooth render - a dramatic, yet balanced juxtaposition that honours heritage while confidently embracing the future.
The design articulates a contemporary response to family living - balancing openness and intimacy through a carefully considered layout. Spatial flow, natural light and functional zoning underpin the composition, creating a home that feels both connected and refined. The result is a six-bedroom, four-bathroom family residence complete with a swimming pool and fully integrated alfresco area.
At the heart of the home lies the central kitchen, dining and family zone - an expansive, light-filled space that forms the social core of the dwelling. Large areas of glazing and a seamless connection to the covered outdoor living area allow the interior to extend beyond its footprint, fostering a strong relationship between indoor and outdoor life. A concealed butler’s pantry enhances both functionality and the visual clarity.
A flexible playroom adjoining the main living space, adapting as the family’s needs evolve. Toward the front, a study and guest suite with ensuite effect provide privacy and retreat. The master suite, occupying one of the restored front rooms, features a generous walk-in robe and ensuite, creating a calm, secluded sanctuary that reinforces the home’s everyday comfort.
Upstairs, three additional bedrooms are supported by a family bathroom, with one enjoying its own ensuite. A dedicated leisure and study area forms a children’s zone - designed for relaxation and play without interrupting the flow of the main living spaces below.
Throughout, the design embodies a clear architectural intent - celebrating proportion, light and connection while responding sensitively to the home’s heritage character and functional demands of contemporary family life.
