NEW HOME
A modern rural retreat blending New Zealand minimalism with Australian landscape living.
Drawing inspiration from the simple gable forms seen throughout rural New Zealand, this home was designed as a spacious and private family sanctuary - a place of balance, calm and connection with its surroundings.
The design captures sweeping southern views while maintaining a strong visual and physical link to the north. At its heart, an infinity-edge pool anchors the home’s layout, creating a seamless connection between architecture and landscape. Sustainability was a key driver, with passive solar design, cross-ventilation and thermal mass principles all contributing to year-round comfort and performance. Every main living space has been carefully oriented to maximise northern light while framing the home’s breathtaking rural outlooks.
With approximately 3.5m of fall across the site, the design naturally evolved into a split-level form. A semi-basement garage is tucked discreetly on the lower western side, minimising site works and allowing the main residence to appear as though it’s floating gently above the landscape - a subtle, sculptural gesture that enhances the home’s sense of lightness and intrigue.
Externally, the home is wrapped in Japanese Shou Sugi Ban charred timber, complemented by accents of natural timber, concrete and stone. The palette is bold yet timeless, providing a tactile balance of warmth and refinement. From every room, expansive glazing captures the surrounding bushland and distant snow-capped mountains, reinforcing the home’s deep connection to place.
Inside, a raw and contemporary palette defines the interiors. High, raked ceilings, polished concrete floors and beautifully detailed joinery set the tone for modern, open plan living. The kitchen with butler’s pantry, dining and family zones - complete with a dedicated drinks area - all celebrate the landscape from every angle.
The master suite provides a luxurious retreat, featuring an opulent walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with walk-in shower and freestanding bath overlooking serene country views. Four additional bedrooms, a nursery and a study are complemented by two elegant, family-friendly bathrooms.
Outdoor living is elevated through expansive decks to both the north and south, designed to capture the changing light and landscape throughout the day. A large undercover alfresco area with wood fire and outdoor kitchen connects effortlessly to the fully landscaped gardens. Completing this picture of rural luxury is a 9-metre heated mineral magnesium swimming pool with infinity edge - the perfect centrepiece for entertaining, relaxation and family life.
