ALTERATION & ADDITION

A sophisticated architectural response where sensitive preservation meets bold contemporary reimagining.

The project retains and celebrates the charm of the circa 1910 red-brick Edwardian façade, maintaining its pitched-roof character and contribution to the streetscape with only minimal, respectful restorations. This connection to the past transitions seamlessly into a sleek contemporary addition at the rear - a dark-clad, glass-filled structure that defines the home’s new identity.

The two-storey rear addition transforms the living experience, opening the home into expansive, light-filled spaces with a seamless indoor–outdoor flow. At its heart lies an open-plan Kitchen, Dining and Family zone, anchored by a palette of light timber, marble finishes and a dramatic double-height void that floods the space with natural light. Full height glazing along the rear façade slides open to reveal a meticulously landscaped backyard, complete with a luxurious alfresco and BBQ area, turfed lawn and a striking swimming pool enclosed by frameless glass fencing.

Above, the first-floor addition is deliberately sleek and recessive - a refined dark form that sits respectfully above the original dwelling. It accommodates Bedrooms 3 and 4, each with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, along with a Study and a cozy leisure retreat nestled within the existing roofline of the heritage home.

Privacy and natural light were key design considerations, with vertical slatted screens on the north elevation providing innovative solutions to overlooking while maintaining openness. The material palette reinforces the dialogue between old and new. Dark, low-maintenance vertical cladding and large glazed openings contrast beautifully against the warmth of the original red brickwork.

To the rear, a detached studio and double garage, accessed via the laneway, continues the contemporary language of the addition. This flexible space serves as a guest suite, home office, or creative studio, extending the home’s functionality.

The result is a harmonious union of heritage and modernity - a home that pays homage to its Edwardian roots while confidently embracing a refined, contemporary lifestyle.
